Chilemba ready for Colombian

Malawian boxer Isaac Chilemba says he is in shape for the World Boxing Council (WBC) light heavyweight title final eliminator against Colombian Eleider Alvarez to be staged at Canada Videotron Centre in Quebec on November 28.

Chilemba (24–2–2, 10 KO), said in an interview he was ready to face the Colombian in his bid for a shot at a world title.

“Training is going great,” said Chilemba, who is in the US in preparation for the fight.

The fight against Alvarez is regarded as Chilemba’s biggest test as he vies for the WBC world title.

The 31-year-old Colombian based in Montreal, Canada, is undefeated in 18 fights with reputable 10 knockouts.

But unlike 28-year-old Chilemba, who has vast experience, Alvarez is a former amateur who won medals at the Pan-America Games, South American Games and also fought at the 2008 Olympics.

The WBC silver light heavyweight title holder turned professional in 2009 in Canada and has maintained his unbeaten record to date.

But Chilemba, who is reputed as a record destroyer, is not scared of the Colombian.

“That’s why it brings me such pleasure destroying those records,” Chilemba tweeted. “True champs are those who face a loss and manage to bounce back.”

Chilemba has maintained a clean record since 2013 when he suffered an embarrassing defeat at the hands of British boxer Tony Bellew in WBC light heavyweight title.

He defeated Michael Gbenga (2013),Denis Grachev (2014), Cory Cummings (2014) and Vasily Lepikhin (2015.)

He is now the top contender in the echelon while Alvarez is second.

The winner, according to World Boxing Council promoter Yvon Michel, becomes mandatory challenger to champion Adonis Stevenson.

“Alvarez and Chilemba are both at the elite level of the light heavyweight division and that will bring a spectacular and intense fight that will determinate the rest of their respective careers,” Michel said in a WBC press statement. n
