Chilomoni police rebuilding at assessment stage

Residents of Chilomoni Township and surrounding areas in Blantyre have said they are making strides in as far as rehabilitation of their burnt-down police sub-station is concerned.

This follows an earlier meeting with the police where they agreed to come up with a task force to assess the damages and how much is needed for renovations.

Chairperson of Namiwawa Social Community Policing, Chifundo Lingao, in an interview on Wednesday, said the task force was formed and the residents adopted a framework to mobilise the required resources.

He said they engaged a volunteer quantity surveyor who reviewed the amount of damage and a volunteer civil engineer quantified building materials required.

Lingao said the group does not want to ask for money without having the actual plan of what is needed on hand and they will only proceed with the resource mobilisation once the quantifying process of building materials needed is complete.

On June 21, some Chilomoni residents torched the unit and destroyed assorted items such as motorcycles, stationary vehicles and security equipment in the process.

The residents were protesting the death of their colleague identified as Dyson Mjojo, 48, who was alleged to have been involved in a fracas with some newly recruited police officers at a drinking joint in the township.
