Chinese firm plans K6.4bn irrigation project in Kasungu

Chinese firm Anhui Hengjin Agricultural Development Limited Malawi plans to set up a K6.4 billion high technology irrigation farming scheme in Kasungu to export some of the produce to China.

The firm’s managing director, Fan Hengjin, who has been in Malawi for three weeks, said in an interview on Tuesday they are waiting to sign a contract with National Association of Smallholder Farmers of Malawi (Nasfam) in November.

“We are only waiting for Nasfam to initiate the contract signing process as we want to enter into Malawi quickly,” he said.

Fan said the company will address some of the food challenges the country is facing, adding that they are better placed for a 100-hectare investment because it has low labour costs.

Nasfam chief executive officer Dyborn Chibonga, responding in an e-mailed questionnaire on Tuesday, could not provide more details, saying the deal has not been finalised.

“We are unable to provide detailed information as requested due to the fact that the investment partnership is still under finalisation and is yet to be presented to the Nasfam Board for final approval,” he said. n
