Ching’oma’s 2010 hit tops sales

After topping Malawi music sales for both gospel and secular music for the whole last year, secular musician Katelele Ching’oma continues to shine on the music market with high sales.

The artist is leading in music sales with his 2010 release Ndili Nawo Mwayi. According to figures sourced from the top music distributor OG Issah, the artist has sold more than any other artist between the last quarter of 2010 through to August 2012.

In 2010, the album was among the top three in OG Issah Best 20 Music chart.

Makawa topped the chart with his popular hit Mbewa Zanga.

However, came 2011, Ndili Nawo Mwayi registered good sales and sold the highest copies of 89 900 in the year, which was characterised by a throat-cut competition between secular and gospel artists.

At the moment, the journey continues for Ching’oma as his album has this year also sold over 100 000 copies to lead the pack of all best artists in the country.

It sold over 50 000 copies during the last four months bringing the total sales of the album to above 200 000.

These figures drag the memories of music lovers to the past six years when Phungu Joseph Nkasa made a similar record with his Mphuno Salota hit.

According to OG Issah, Ching’oma is being seconded by Thocco Katimba with his Ndidzaimabe album. The album has also sold close to 50 000 copies in the past four months at the shop.

“This year’s race in music sales is tight, but I can announce that Ching’oma is still leading the pack. The difference is not too huge at the moment,” said OG Issah’s boss Stanec Kulemeka.

Kulemeka said that he is still receiving huge demand for the two albums.

He further said sales the market is promising another tight competition in sales during the last quarter.

He said, new albums like Kwatelela of George Kafodya and Joe Gwaladi’s Turmbocid are some of the hits on high demand at the moment.

A cross-check with other distributors like Dolphin and Ali music centres also indicate that the named albums including Mlaka Maliro’s Hossana CD
are doing better on the market.
