Chingadzi Parish Golden Jubilee next Saturday

Christians and communities surrounding Chingadzi Catholic Parish in Thyolo are set to celebrate the parish’s Golden Jubilee next Saturday, June 20.

According to a history book written by John Chome, Chingadzi was elevated to parish status in 1964 by Archbishop J.B. Theunissen and was consecrated by the late Archbishop James Chiona in 1966 after completion of the priests’ house and a bigger church.

Prior to this, the church used to be an outstation of Glenae (now Adolorata [Thyolo] Catholic Church) a few kilometres from Thyolo Boma.

Chairperson of the Golden Jubilee celebrations organising committee Innocent Mboma told Nation on Sunday during the week that preparations were at an advanced stage and that the faithful were just waiting for the big day.

Mboma emphasised that everyone is invited to the celebrations, during which Archbishop Thomas Msusa of Blantyre will also ordain to priesthood Deacon Pius Chilimba of the Comboni missionaries.

“This is a great day to us. We’ve lined up a number of activities, including performances to garnish our celebrations. Everyone is welcome to join us in the celebrations,” said Mboma.

According to Mboma, the book detailing the history of Chingadzi Parish will be auctioned on that day and proceeds will specifically go towards repairing of the church’s roof which has been damaged by termites.

“It is our wish that many people should come and participate in the auctioning of the book to enable us to repair the church’s roof, which we were not able to do because of many other financial commitments towards the celebrations,” said Mboma.

Chome authored the book to give an impression on how the parish has grown from a (small Christian community (m’phakati), an outstation and a full stand-alone parish that now celebrates 50 years of existence.

The book includes, testimonies of some surviving early Christians of the parish, including 100-year-old Ulalia Mijela.

It also documents contributions the Catholic Church has made through Chingadzi Parish towards improving the social and economic livelihoods of the people around Goliati Trading Centre where the parish is located.

The 84-page book published and printed by Montfort Media in both English and Chichewa is selling at K2 000 per copy and is available at Chingadzi Parish and other outlets in the Archdioceses of Blantyre and Lilongwe.
