Chiradzulu District Council comprises 10 wards. Kaliya and Naphiyo were running for a second term.

The elections were conducted following the expiry of the one-year term of office for the office bearers as stipulated by the Local Government Act.

In his maiden speech, Kamwendo thanked his fellow councillors for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the council.

“During my term, I will work for the benefit of the whole district. I will ensure that development projects are evenly distributed,’ said Kamwendo adding that he will also ensure that a cordial working relationship between councillors and the secretariat prevails in the district.

Chiradzulu councillors have been calling for the removal of acting director of planning and development Morson Magombo.

Last year, the councillors pressed for the removal of the then district commissioner James Manyetera who was eventually replaced by Ali Phiri.
