Chiradzulu hosts 20 foreign doctors
A group of about 20 foreign specialist doctors are camping at Chiradzulu District Hospital where they are treating patients, including performing surgeries, for free.
The Singaporean specialists under Global Clinic, a non-governmental organisation comprising medical and non-medical volunteers based in Singapore, will wind up their mission tomorrow.
The medical team is in the country courtesy of Amitofo Care Centre (ACC), who recently held similar camps in the district.
ACC Malawi country director Yuang Tong said they are attempting to address various chronic illnesses in the district and surrounding community through their global mission’s objective of caring without borders.
In her remarks, Global Clinic head of women’s health Yang Chua said such interventions by her organisation are usually followed by a long-term programme to improve health and access to medical care of residents of their partner communities.
“Since our establishment in 1997, we have been organising medical missions globally to underprivileged communities who cannot access medical care due to poverty,” she said.
On his part, Chiradzulu district health officer Jameson Chausa hailed the initiative, calling it timely.
“Queen Elizabeth [Central Hospital] as a referral facility is sometimes congested. Worse still, many referral cases cannot be taken there due to logistical challenges. So, we appreciate their visit,” he said. Meanwhile, Global Clinic has treated about 30 000 individuals in 11 countries throughout Asia and Africa
