Chitipa United FC Simama Northern Region Football Association (NRFA) Premier League title aspirations suffered a setback following their 0-1 loss to fellow title contenders Kaporo Stars at Mzuzu Stadium.
League leaders Chitipa needed a win to seal the title and earn TNM Super League promotion. This means the chase for the title will go down to the wire.
Defender Pilirani Thulu scored the lone goal in the 83rd minute to reduce the gap to just two points.
Chitipa have 86 points from 37 matches while Kaporo have 84 also from the same number of games.
Chitipa’s last game will be against Mchengautuwa at home while Kaporo Stars will face Nthalire United also at home.
However, in a post-match interview, Kaporo team manager Kitwell Cheyo said: “We are happy to have won the match because we have reduced the gap.”
On his part, Chitipa United coach Robert Mziza claimed that they only need a point from their game against Mchengautuwa to earn promotion to Super League.
“It was painful to lose such a crucial game but we are not panicking, “he said. n
