Chitipa to remember road accident victims

A month after a fatal accident claimed nine lives at Kaseghe Bridge in Chitipa District, the Chitipa African Church has organised a memorial service in their honour.

The ceremony’s organising committee publicity secretary Ian Mdolo, disclosed that the service will take place on November 6 to accord friends and relatives a chance for closure.

“We buried our relatives around 7pm with no proper ceremony because we could not keep the remains until the next day and also considering that some were in hospital receiving treatment,” he said.

Mdolo said the accident traumatised the bereaved families and the church that is why they have organised the event to bring closure.

“We will seek God’s comfort. We are, therefore, calling all people to come and join us. We will also pray for different issues that the nation is facing,” he said.

In a separate interview, Senior Chief Kameme of the district said the accident led to loss of productive people in his area.

“These people were always with us during community activities and some were our children, brothers and sisters.

“Let us all come together and pray that their souls should rest in peace, as well as to celebrate the good moments that we shared with them,” said Kameme.

On the fateful day, a Fuso Fighter lorry carrying 72 people overturned at Kaseghe Bridge on the Ifumbo-Lufita Road in the district.

Eight people died on the spot and one died later at Chitipa District Hospital while 64 others sustained injuries.
