Chiwaula tops Royal Motors Juniors Tourney

The National Junior Order of Merit (South) monthly junior’s tournaments for 2014 teed-off at Blantyre Sports Club on Sunday with 16-year-old Gilton Chiwaula earning maximum points atf the event.
Chiwaula, who struggled playing in the thick rough like other competitors, carded in 99 gross to emerge winner of the March tournament.
“I could have played far much better, but the rough was too thick and a number of my friends also struggled to hit the balls out of the rough to the fairways. But I enjoyed playing the game.  I thank my parents for the support they give me all the time. I had a wonderful time playing with Ciara and Dshawn,” said an excited Chiwaula.
In second position was Nchalo-based Nelson Phiri with 105 while Kyle Jussab came third with a total of 112 strokes.
The 18 hole category of the ladies tee box was won by Ciara Araujo with 126 strokes. She beat youngest ever junior to be competing in the 18 holes category, 10-year-old Marcus Chalulu, by 15 strokes while Mubelele Mhango came third with 154 strokes.
The nine hole category saw Muhammed Bhana scooping gold with 75 strokes followed by Tatenda Kantwanje with 86 strokes while Aahil Raidhan, with a gross score of 88, came third.
The five holes category gold was won by Mikhail Mukadam having hit the ball 43 times while second and third places went to Miguel Araujo and Rayaan Raidhan with 52 and 56 strokes respectively. There were competitive scores in the three holes category, which saw four-year-old Gibriel Lambart beating six other contenders with a brilliant score of 21 strokes having played holes 1, 12 and 18. He was followed by Graham Mactavish with 24 strokes while the sponsor’s son, Muhammed Abdul, settled for bronze with 25 strokes.
In an interview, Abdul Muhammed, who runs the firm and is a former Malawi national golf team player said Royal Motors was proud to be associated with golf development in Malawi. “It is good to see the kids play golf. They are the future of golf in Malawi. They can take this game to another level, especially when they start young like this. We are, therefore, happy to be here,” Muhammed said.
