Choose a word to guide you in 2015

Listen to this article

With the New Year ushered in, I can picture a flurry of resolutions put together for 2015. By we all know most people only hang onto them till mid February before ‘business as usual’ sets in. An alternative is to set goals. As some find it easier to keep a general direction rather than specific goals, I’d like to suggest you do something different for 2015. Choose a work to guide your progress in 2015. Here are some first steps;

Choose a positive verb:

A verb (rather than a noun) keeps you hooked on the frame of word that you’ll be to be ‘doing’ something. For example, choosing ‘courageous’ instead of ‘courage’ would guide you to overcome fears. Your word should energise, help you stay present and watch yourself make choices and take actions that keep you learning and growing.

Choose a single word:

This is preferable to choosing a phrase or a sentence. A single word gives you focus, such as advance, maximise and grow. Also, you don’t need anyone to endorse that word; it’s yours and yours alone. By all means, if there are people in your life you want to share it with, that’s fine.

Choose a word that has meaning:

Your word should be more than a noble intention. If your challenge has been inability to follow through resolutions, starting with a big word maybe biting of more than you can chew. Go with a word that encourages and challenges you at the same time.

Your word does not have to be perfect:

Start from where you are so you begin from a place of honesty, but with a word that pushes you to a different place in a year’s time. You may start with one word for the first four months.

Now take action:

Choose your word for 2015 by the end of this week.
