Christians in the country joined the rest of the world yesterday on Good Friday to hold the Way of the Cross.

Catholics, Anglicans, Presbyterians and other Christians in Malawi walked in solemn commemoration of the annual event after He was betrayed by Judas to Golgotha where he was nailed to a cross until his death.

Through that painful death, Jesus Christ saved mankind from all the sins for all believers.

In Blantyre, Catholics from St. Pius Parish X and Chilobwe Parish started their Way of Cross from St Pius Parish to Chilobwe Parish, covering a distance of about five kilometres.

The Catholics from the two parishes, with women beautifully dressed in their purple and white colours and led by Father George Kaliati who is also Dean of Blantyre Diocese, observed the 14 Stations of the Cross.

The 14 devotions or stations, focus on specific events of His last day, beginning with His condemnation.

At each station the Christians recalled and meditated on a specific event from Christ’s last day, citing specific prayers.

At St. Michael and All Angels, which falls under the Blantyre Synod of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP), Christians observed the Way of the Cross by going round the church’s campus. They were led by the church’s moderator Reverend Masauko Mbolembole.

Some Anglican churches in Blantyre that include Holy Innocence, Soche Christ the King, St. Andrews Soche and St. Matthews Chichiri started their way from Manase, taking the Chikwawa Road then turning at Stella Maris through Zingwangwa and ended up at Christ the King in Soche.

In Lilongwe, the Catholic faithful joined by Vice-President Saulos Cilima walked from Area 18 to Maula Parish.

In a brief statement to the faithful after being asked to do so by Archbishop Emeritus Benard Malango, the Vice-President urged Christians to spare time once a year and participate in the Way of the Cross to feel the suffering that Jesus went through to wash our sins.
