CHRR, Cedep want UN, AU to rework anti-terrorism war
The Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) and Centre for Development of People (Cedep) have appealed to the United Nations (UN) and African Union (AU) to rework their anti-terrorism war.
CHRR and Cedep in their reaction to Saturday’s mass shooting in a Nairobi shopping mall in Kenya which claimed said the UNand AU should be proactive in dealing with terrorism.
At least 70 people have died and 170 others injured. The Somali al-Shabab movement has said it carried out the attack in retaliation for Kenyan military operations in Somalia.
“CHRR and Cedep have been following with dismay events surrounding the Saturday’s eye sore on the face of the East African state of Kenya. From what we gather, groups of armed terrorists from the militant Islamic group, al-Shabab, over the weekend stormed a Kenyan shopping mall and gunned down innocent civilians.
“Without dwelling much on the cause of the attack, we as human rights defenders find the heinous attack as yet another scandal on the human race and global peace. Thus, our hearts go out to President Uhuru Kenyatta and the entire nation of Kenya for the despicable act.
“It is in this vein, that we, at CHRR and Cedep echo the global condemnation of what has befallen our brothers and sisters in Kenya,” reads a statement signed by Timothy Mtambo, CHRR acting executive director and Gift Trapence, Cedep executive director.
CHRR and Cedep added that the scale of attack in itself suggests the global solidarity with Kenya should go beyond condemning and sending condolence messages.
“It is, therefore, our appeal to the UNand AU family to rework their anti-terrorism war. Terrorism has no place in modern democracy and must be condemned ” reads the statement in part.
