The Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR), in partnership with Plan Malawi, is implementing a three-year project in Karonga and Chitipa to motivate school going children to remain in school.

The project, titled ‘Strengthening Learning Without Fear’, wants children to realise their right to protection through a protective environment within schools and surrounding communities created for achieving positive education outcomes.

So far, CHRR has carried out a number of activities in areas of traditional authorities Nthalire and Kameme in Chitipa and Mwilang’ombe in Karonga.

The activities included motivational talk by Chitipa district social welfare officer Joyce Luhanga and youth parliamentarian from Karonga’s Nyungwe Zone, Pauline Kilama.

CHRR also presented desks and sports balls to some schools in the two districts. There were also academic awards in the form of school bags, exercise books and pencils.

CHRR project officer Christina Nthenda acknowledged the importance of giving out academic awards in order to encourage competition among learners.
