Church feeds Mzuzu prisoners

Members of St Andrew Church Katoto Section of CCAP Synod of Livingsonia yesterday celebrated Independence Day by cheering over 600 inmates at Mzuzu Prison.

Speaking during the event, Katoto Section chairperson Brian Chaula said the members decided to support the prisoners as they face a lot of challenges.

He said they contributed K546 000 to buy food, soap and petroleum jelly.

“There is need for other stakeholders to come in. There are a number of things that these people need,” said Chaula.

Mzuzu Prison station officer Marshall Kamangadazi said caring for prisoners is not an easy task.

“We have several skills development programmes as one way of reforming the inmates. But such interventions cannot be fruitful without God. The inmates need to change right from their hearts for them to live a good life,” he said.

A representative of the inmates, James Mwalilino, commended the church members for sparing time and resources to cheer the prisoners. n
