Churches organise unity prayers

Over 10 Christian denominations recently organised a joint night of prayer where the clergy devoted their time to pray for unity among churches.

The prayers took place at Bishop Mackenzie Hall in Blantyre.

One of the organisers, Pastor Thomas Gama, said the clergy were very concerned that the spirit of divisions and castigations continue to reign in and between churches.

Gama disclosed that there are some religious groups that have busied themselves with mud-slinging of other faiths in their attempt to portray themselves as the best churches.

“This is very bad because, as churches, we need to work together in propagating the word of God. We believe that the devil is behind this behaviour and that’s why we’ve organised the prayers to seek God’s intervention,” he said.

The pastor said unity among churches would play a critical role in the propagation of the word of God.

He emphasised the need for churches to speak with one voice when spreading the gospel, arguing intra-faith confrontations are counter-productive and retrogressive in the service of the Lord.

“Should we be fighting over petty issues such as the holding of different beliefs? I don’t think that’s helpful in the ministry of God,” argued Gama.

He appealed to members of different faiths to unite around the Bible and stop what he termed the ‘unnecessary arguments over interpretations of different verses in the Bible’.
