Civil Sporting push to end poor run

Super League outfit Civil Sporting Club leadership convened a crisis meeting with players, supporters and the technical panel in the wake of the team’s poor run.

Held on Tuesday at Civo Stadium, the meeting came after Civil lost 1-0 to TN Stars and dropped 12th position just two points above the relegation zone.

Confirming the gathering, Civil general secretary Ronald Chiwaula said the leadership felt that the players were not committed to the club’s cause.

“We spoke to the entire Civil family after the painful loss to TN Stars. The message was across the board but mainly to the players,” he said.

“The players need to show commitment. It should reflect their appreciation for being on the government payroll as senior civil servants.”

Civil started the league on a promising note having won their opening three league games. However, apart from losing to Mzuni in the Airtel Top 8, they have suffered four consecutive league losses.

However, the Civil executive committee seems to have kept its faith in coach Franco Ndawa led technical panel.

“We feel everything is not lost. We believe we can turn things around and start getting the results again.

“It just needs collective responsibility and not finger pointing,” Chiwaula said.

In a separate interview yesterday, Civil vice-captain Emmanuel Zoya hailed the meeting as a positive step towards restoring the lost glory.

“It was a time to reflect and re-gain positive energy. We apologised for the poor form and pledged to be more committed,” he said.

Zoya could not point out the cause of the slump in form describing it as just a “bad spell which every team can go through in their season.”
