Ladder for Rural Development Organisation on Friday drilled 20 religious leaders in Ntchisi in fighting stigma and discrimination against lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) and people living with HIV.

Speaking at the end of the training, Ladder for Rural Development Organisation executive director Godfrey Kam’munda said they wanted to sensitise the clergy to the importance of creating a favourable environment for people living with HIV, sex workers and the LGBTI community, among others.

“The training is important because too much stigma and discrimination is taking place in the society. Through the training, the clergy will understand and reduce stigma and discrimination in their religious circles,” he said.

One of the participants, Pastor Akson Benjamin of Assemblies of God Church, commended Ladder for Rural Development Organisation for the training, saying it will help them promote minority rights.

“There is indeed stigma and discrimination in our churches targeting people living with HIV, sex workers and many others. With the training, we will avoid sidelining such people and treat them equally,” he said.

Ladder for Rural Development Organisation conducted the training with funding from Amplify Change. n
