Super League clubs have asked FAM to consider giving up the 10 percent share it takes from proceeds of gate collections on the basis that the association already gets enough from cup and international games.
The clubs also demanded that they should be sharing 25 percent each from the gross proceedings of the gate collections, instead of the net which is the current practice.
The issues were raised during the meeting Football Association of Malawi (FAM) had with Sulom and the teams at Chiwembe Technical Centre in Limbe on Monday where clubs demanded that, instead, FAM’s cut should go towards the clubs.
Big Bullets general secretary Higger Mkandawire and his Mighty Wanderers counterpart David Kanyenda argued that since FAM already gets 20 percent from cup games, they should consider scrapping off their allocation from league game proceeds.
“Besides that, FAM also gets a big share from the proceeds of international games and we felt it would only be fair if their league games share would go towards the clubs to boost clubs’ finances,” he said.
He added: “We further proposed that clubs should be getting 25 percent each from the gross proceeds other than from the nett so that we should benefit more.”
On his part, Kanyenda said since FAM delegates Sulom to run the league on their behalf, it is not realistic for the association to be getting a cut from proceeds of league games.
Sulom general secretary Williams Banda and FAM chief executive officer Suzgo Nyirenda confirmed the issue.
Said Banda: “The issue was indeed discussed at length, but FAM’s argument was that they use the money to organise technical courses and, therefore, their share from the proceeds of the league games is justified.
“However, in the end, it was agreed that the issue should be referred to the executive committee of FAM for its perusal and that a determination should be made by the end of the first round.”
Nyirenda confirmed in an interview with Nation Online on Tuesday that the issue would be referred to the executive committee.
Currently, clubs gate 25 percent each from the nett proceeds of the gate collections.
The meeting also agreed that the minimum gate entry fee for Super League games should be K200 (about $0.50) whereas the maximum has been pegged at K500 (about $1.25).
