Central Medical Stores Trust (CMST) has donated 400 wheeled trash bins worth about K9 million to Beautify Malawi Trust (BEAM) to help it in its mission of making Malawi a clean and healthier nation.

Receiving the donation on Saturday, Beam patron First Lady Gertrude Mutharika hailed CMST for the bins, saying they will assist her trust in transforming the country’s state of cleanliness.

“At Beam, we are greatly concerned about the sorry state of sanitation in most of our local communities, both rural and urban, which exposes residents to preventable health hazards,” she said.

The bins were part of the opening stock of CMST pharmaceutical commodities available for purchase by health facilities when it was evolving into a Trust in 2011.

In her remarks, CMST board of trustees chairperson Evelyn Itimu said they decided to donate the bins considering that “challenges to keep Malawi cleaner and healthier were huge and needed collective responsibility”.

In a related development, the First Lady, through Beam, has pledged to continue supporting a Standard Six pupil, Patricia Chimenya, until she finishes her education.

Mabvuto Bamusi, presidential adviser on non-governmental organisations (NGOs), said this on Thursday at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (Qech) in Blantyre when Patricia, alongside her mother, Ida, received an artificial leg from the hospital courtesy of Beam.

The 10-year-old Bangwe Primary School girl was born with a disability and had difficulties to attend classes.
