Coaches get relief on CAF-B licence

FAM and National Football Coaches Association (NFCA) have resolved to allow coaches that have CAF-C coaching licences to be engaged as assistant coaches for Super League clubs only for the 2020 season.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) licensing and compliance manager Casper Jangale and NFCA general secretary Dave Mpima said the resolution follows the postponement of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) B coaching licence course due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mponda: It was only logical for us to continue

Said Jangale yesterday: “Until last season, Super League clubs were allowed to hire CAF C licence holders as assistant coaches, but from the forthcoming [2020] season], the stakes were expected to be upped.

“CAF was supposed to hold a CAF B licence course in March to give a chance to coaches that did not have the licence to attain it, but it was postponed indefinitely due to the pandemic.

“And since it was not out of the coaches’ making, we resolved to soften up until the course is held.”

On his part, Mpima said due to travel bans and social distance conditions, “it was practically impossible to hold course”.

He said: “On travel ban, it meant CAF could not send its assessors for the course.”

Nyasa Big Bullets’ Peter Mponda, his Be Forward Wanderers counterpart Oscar Kaunda, Civil Service (Civo) United’s Elia Kananji and Silver Strikers’ McDonald Yobe are some of the coaches that do not have CAF B licences.

Mponda yesterday said following the postponement of the course, “it was only logical for the relevant bodies to soften up on the conditions and allow us to continue as assistant coaches”.

The CAF B coaching course has not been held for the past four years.
