Phambala was fired alongside his assistant Chifundo Masapula half-way through the TNM Super League last season following the team’s spate of losses. He was replaced by Nelson Chirwa who is reportedly out of the country on military duties.

Cobbe team manager Lawrence Mphande confirmed the development in an interview on Wednesday.

“It is true we have recalled [Billie] Phambala to beef up our technical panel since Nelson (Chirwa) is in Ivory Coast. Our general secretary Happy Phiri was acting as coach,” said Mphande.

In a separate interview, Phambala expressed gratitude for being recalled to the team.

“You know it was a hard decision to make considering how we were shown the exit last season. But since this is my job, I had to accept it and get down to business. My first task is to make the team win against Tigers Youth in the Carlsberg Cup on Sunday,” he said.

The team, which was relegated from the Super League, is now bracing for life in the second-tier Peter Mutharika Southern Region Football League (SRFL) which starts this weekend.

Mphande hinted that there might also be a possibility of bringing back Masapula after analysing the technical panel.
