College of Medicine (COM) has launched a one year training course for lecturers at the college called Basic Certificate in Medicine and Health Science Education (BCMHSE).

The course seeks to contribute to the improvement of teaching in the undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the medical school through continued professional development of lecturers.

Thomson: The certificate is designed to equip academic staff

The course has 13 modules for all and three modules which are specific to lecturers of particular faculties.

Chairperson for College of Medicine Education and Training Office, Dr. Emma Thomson said the certificate is designed to equip academic staff at the college with pedagogical skills.

“We are targeting all those who are teaching here at College of Medicine.

“We are giving the lecturers weekly modules that take 20 minutes to complete to allow them attend other duties,” she said.

She added that they noticed a gap since some lecturers at the college were picked straight from the college after performing well when they were students but still needed more skills to make them perform equally well as lecturers.

The course will be delivered using web-based lessons and offline-eLearning applications.
