Commission appointed to probe Bingu’s death
Malawi President Joyce Banda has appointed a commission of inquiry to probe death of the former president Bingu wa Mutharika.
The commission will also investigate the role and activities of various individuals such as former Cabinet ministers and other government officials during and in managing the transition.
Mutharika died in early April this year after he suffered a cardiac arrest at the New State House in Lilongwe.
According to a press statement issued on Thursday and signed by Chief Secretary to Government Bright Msaka, chairperson of the commission is retired High Court Judge Elton Singini. Other members are pathologist Dr Charles Dzamalala, former Inspector General of Police Joseph Airon, Dr Tionge Loga, Dr Elizabeth Sibale, lawyer Jabber Alide, Catholic priest Father Joseph Mpinganjira, Brian Nyasulu and former Air Malawi general manager Esther Chioko.
President Banda in her State of the Nation Address in Parliament said her government would set up a commission to probe Mutharika’s death and activities of some individuals that allegedly attempted to subvert the constitutional order.
It was alleged that the former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) wanted to seek a court order and swear former Foreign Affairs minister Peter Mutharika, the late president’s brother, as Malawi’s leader.
