The gathering forced motorists to move at a snail’s pace as some people descended into the river to help police in the manhunt, but to no avail.

When The Nation visited the scene around 8am, a witness, who only identified himself as Justin, said a man stole a battery from a shop and when he came to the river he met two men who wanted to snatch the battery from him.

Said Justin: “That is when misunderstandings ensued and the three exchanged blows, forcing people who were going to work to stop at the bridge to watch the fight. When the police saw the men fighting they started chasing them and they [the trio] run away, abandoning the battery at the scene.”

However, Justin said when the two were running away some people started speculating that they had stolen K8 million.

Lilongwe Police spokesperson Kingsley Dandaula asked for more time to get details on the issue.
