Communication key in PWP projects

Communication and knowledge are very crucial in the success of Public Works Programme as local leaders and the communities become aware of all the procedures of the programme hence promoting transparency and accountability in the programme, said Ruth Nkhwazi, programmes officer for Kalondolondo Project.

Nkhwazi said this on Wednesday at Ntchisi Boma when Mponela Aids Information and Counseling Centre (Maicc) presented report on their evaluation of Public Works Programme in the district.

She said it was important that people in rural areas be aware of the whole programme so that they know all the procedures such that they can realise and identify the shortfalls of the programme and report to relevant authorities.

“People should know when the programme would commence in their area, they should also know how much they would get at the end of the 12 days they would work and the distance they would work on reshaping the roads every day. With such information some problems experienced in the implementation of the programme would be reduced,” said Nkhwazi.

The programmes officer said in the wake that there were findings that some local leaders in collaboration with foremen recruited relations only and created ghost workers who could not be traced.

“Due to ignorance, beneficiaries were given work more than what they could do in a day because they had no information. We want the council to take the messages to the communities before the programmes commence to minimise the irregularities,” she said.

Representing the council, Davies Chogawana, the district’s environmental officer, said the council through community development office would sensitise the people in Public Works targeted areas so that they understand it better for its success.

“We acknowledge our average score on this evaluation and we will take it as an eye opener and rectify our shortfalls so that we score highly in the next phase of the programme,” said Chogawana.

Public Works Programme is a Malawi government initiative aiming at increasing incomes of poor families and reduce food insecurity through activities which among others is re-handling and shaping dusty roads, which beneficiaries get K3 600 after working for 12 twelve days.
