Communities demonstrate in Karonga

Mwaulambo

Hundreds of people surrounding Mwaulambo Coal Mine site in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Kilupula on Thursday held demonstrations against Eland Coal Mine Company for failing to fulfil the memorandum of understanding(MoU) the two parties agreed in 2013. Eleven villages headed by their group village heads marched from Ngerenge Community Day Secondary School to the mining site, two kilometres away, carrying a banner with a message stopping Eland from transferring machines until it fills up the trenches that were dug during its mining activities. The development follows reports that the company is leaving the site. In the petition, which was signed by chairperson of the community, group village heads Mwangomba and his secretary Harry Mwakayoka, the community is demanding that Eland fills up all the open pits within 48 hours. According to the 2013 MoU, Eland promised to provide the communities with school blocks, potable water, and to upgrade Mwaulambo Clinic.
