The community around Kamwala in Mzimba District has faulted Mzimba Hora member of Parliament (MP) the Reverend Christopher Mzomera Ngwira for failing to complete construction of a health centre that stalled in 2012.

The uncompleted health centre is located near St Mary’s Full Primary School in the constituency.

Some of the people in the area told Malawi News Agency (Mana) yesterday that in some cases, pregnant women deliver while in transit to health facilities, some of them located as far as 20 kilometres away.

Group village head Chigoga Jere said the MP was to blame for the project’s delayed completion.

But in an interview, Ngiwira attributed the delay to lack of funds.

He said he was currently discussing with government to assist in completing the project.

Said Ngwira: “The proposal to have a clinic at St Mary’s was initiated in 2010 and the project was supposed to be completed in 2011, but it was not approved until 2012.”

He said the project was embarked on using the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

He assured the communities that work would resume in the next two months and that he was hopeful it would be allocated funds in the 2017/18 National Budget set to roll out on July 1. n
