Concern Worldwide has donated personal protective equipment (PPE) to Likuni Mission Hospital in Lilongwe to enhance its efforts in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic.

In an interview, Concern Worldwide programmes manager Linda Mwale said the donation was in preparation for a possible third wave of the pandemic.

She said: “With funding from the European Commission Humanitarian Office [Echo] programme under the European Union, we launched a Covid-19 project to enhance awareness among community members.

“So, we provide medical equipment and capacity building to different stakeholders.”

Mwale said they donated the equipment to Likuni Mission Hospital because the facility plans to open a new 12-bed ward for Covid-19.

In his remarks, the hospital’s chief medical officer Jeremoni Chiundira said the donation will help the hospital to establish its first Covid-19 treatment unit.

He said: “As of now, we are renovating the tuberculosis [TB] ward to accommodate Covid-19 patients.

“We did not have sufficient beds, mattresses and other items.”

The donation included face masks, oxygen concentrators and bed linen.

The organisation has also reached out to Bwaila, Dzenza, Areas 18 and 25 health facilities. n
