Condom, diaper dumping worry First Lady

Listen to this article

BEAM_clean-upFirst Lady Gertrude Mutharika has said the manner in which Malawians dispose of used condoms and diapers, among other waste, is a concern that should be addressed urgently. Mutharika expressed the concern yesterday in Lilongwe when she engaged residents of the city’s areas 47 and 18 in clearing their surroundings of waste. The exercise was part of the programmes lined up by the Gertrude Mutharika Beautify Malawi (Beam) Trust. Said the First Lady: “If we can learn to keep our surroundings clean, it will be easy for us to keep our entire cities clean.” In his remarks, Lilongwe City mayor Willie Chapondera urged the city’s dwellers to emulate the example set by Beam, saying “ensuring that the city remains clean is everybody’s responsibility”. 1. Sweeping the streets while donning the DPP regalia is a clear indication of politically motivated actions christened as charity work.

The first lady should have known or at least her advisers should have told her to leave her DPP underwear at home when she ventures out for any charitable work.
Take politics out of your beautify Malawi organisation or else you will not gonna win hearts and mind across the political spectrum in Malawi.

I liked what she said about the disposition of condoms though, but she stopped short of telling people how to do it safely, it would have been good if she had told Malawians how her husband does it, I guess Mr President wouldn’t mind to lead by example on this issue.

By the way this sweeping exercise of our streets in the capital is the work of our city council and not the first lady and her cohorts, the best thing the first lady can do is tell her husband to give enough resources to the council so that we can have waste bins in appropriate places around the city where people can dispose their waste appropriately.

The first should also be advised that she is putting the life of her fellow DPP members who are participating in this sweeping exercise without wearing the right protective, gear at risk.
