Head teacher at Chizimya Primary School in Mzimba South has disclosed that about 60 learners from his school started indulging in sexual activities after receiving condoms from health workers.

Martin Lungu disclosed this in Inkosi ya Makosi Mbelwa’s area where the Livingstonia Synod Health Department hosted a home party to engage the community members in sexual and reproductive health issues affecting adolescents.

“After the condoms were distributed, we started noticing poor performance among some learners from standard Six to Eight,” he said.

Lungu said the cat was let out of the bag when a learner with a sexual partner was found with a love letter and revealed to the school’s authority after counselling that she was not the only one indulging in sex.

“The girl revealed in the course of counselling that she was not the only one doing it and started revealing other learners. Our investigations have revealed that 60 learners, mostly the ones who were given condoms, were involved,” he said.

However, the synod’s deputy director Margaret Msukwa said their project does not promote distribution of condoms to adolescents, saying it might be other stakeholders in similar projects who distributed condoms at the school. n
