Consumers Association of Malawi (Cama) has said it intends to write Illovo Sugar Malawi Limited on poor sugar packaging that leave the product spilling; therefore not worth the value of consumers money.

In an interview Cama’s executive director John Kapito told Business News the organisation has been flooded with complaints from consumers on poor sugar packaging.

He said: “We first wrote them last year and they improved for a while but now the situation is worse. When you think you are buying a one kilogramme (kg) pack, it turns out to be 800 grams due to spills.”

He has since called on local sugar manufacturer, Illovo Sugar (Malawi) Limited to work on improving packaging.

But in an email response to a questionnaire, Illovo public relations officer Irene Phalula while confirming receiving the complaints about packaging said the company has improved it packaging.

She said: “We are now using a mixture of locally produced packaging and imported packing to address this problem.”

She said the company intends to launch a new pack before this Christmas after trials have proved that the new packing material is robust. n
