Consumers hold demonstration, Kapito warns on next leader
Consumer Association of Malawi (Cama) executive director John Kapito has warned Malawians not to elect a president with a record of mismanagement of government coffers but they should ensure that all presidential candidates declare their assets before May 2014 election.
Kapito was addressing a sizable crowd that took part in the demonstration held today in the capital against the rampant mismanagement of tax-payers money at Capital Hill as disclosed in the number of civil servants arrested with unexplained cash in their homes or vehicles.
The demonstration started from the Parliament Building roundabout and ended at Civic Offices where the marchers presented a petition to the Lilongwe City chief executive officer Richard Hara.
The marchers carried placards with the words ‘Joyce Banda walephera kuyendetsa dziko la Malawi’ [Joyce Banda has failed to govern this country]‘ Mphwiyo chira msanga uzafotokoze,’ [Mphwiyo should explain the looting] ‘Akulu a boma onse apume panthawi imene kubaku kukufufuzidwa’ [Top government officials should resign to pave way for investigations] among others.
“All these political leaders we have in the country, their hands are not clean. They started stealing a long time ago. My fellow Malawians, if we are not careful in the next election, we will choose another leader who steals like this one.
We want the next leader who wants to take this seat in 2014 to be honest and declare his assets, how much money do you have? How many goats do you have?” Kapito said.
Commenting on President Joyce Banda’s assertions that she has money has never been as issue to her since she started doing business when she was 21,
Kapito said there was no evidence as long as the country is not aware of her assets.
“We have seen orange painted vehicles belonging to PP, how did the party pay for those vehicles? We want an explanation,” he said.
Kapito vowed that demonstrations would be conducted periodically until action is taken and senior government officials implicated in the scandal are brought to book.
