Mota-Engil SA, a contractor working on the Lilongwe Old Airport-Kasiya Road, has said the road will be ready by January 11 2019 as estimated.

“We had major works such as the Bua Bridge which has been completed. Culverts are also done and most of the surface is also completed. The major task remaining is the overhead bridge above the railway line,” he said.

Minister of Transport and Public Works Jappie Mhango said government is satisfied with the progress of the project which is expected to improve people’s lives in communities along the road.

“This road passes through communities with a good history of farming. The people will be at an advantage in terms of transportation of farm produce. Apart from that, health issues will improve as referral cases to bigger hospitals will move faster and transport fares will be affordable,” he said.

National Roads Authority (NRA) chief executive officer (CEO) Emmanuel Matapa said the project has deliberately included the overhead bridge following construction recommendations to reduce accidents between locomotives and vehicles.

Matapa said the overhead bridge may take 28 more days after the actual completion of the road to allow concrete to fully dry up.

The government of Malawi is financing the road to the tune of K39.7 billion.
