Residents have queried whereabouts of money that some communities in Mulanje contributed for a house at a health centre.

National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) brought together community leaders, chiefs and duty-bearers to discuss and find common solutions to development issues on Friday.

Among the hot topics was the mystery surrounding the money that communities contributed for construction of a medical personnel house at Mpala Health Centre.

Mphusu Action Group chairperson Luka Douglas said people, including those from neighbouring Mozambique who are served by the centre, made contributions to build another house for a medical personnel.

“Every user of the hospital contributed K200 and this started in 2013. We do not know how much was collected and where the money went,” he said.

Douglas told the meeting that they wrote the District Health Office (DHO) in Mulanje, but have not been assisted.

Mulanje District Hospital acting medical officer Martin Malunga said they will investigate the matter.

“We will go there are and talk to the health advisory committee (HAC) and if necessary, we will involve the police,” he said.

Nice district civic education officer Twambilire Mwabungulu said such meetings help duty-bearers to hear complaints from the people they serve.

Present to the meeting included officials from the judiciary, police and Mulanje District Council.n
