Cori approves Kukoma Invitational tourney
Capital Oil Refining Industries (Cori), sponsors of Kukoma Diamonds Netball Team, have accepted the team’s proposal to stage an invitational tournament next month.
Diamonds general secretary Chimwemwe Bakali said the tournament has targeted teams which finished in the top four in the Southern Region Netball League (SRNL) last season.
Cori sponsorship coordinator Violet Kapolo said the company is ready and willing to sponsor the mini-tournament because it will help teams to tune up for next season.
“It is a commendable idea and we will provide funding. However, at this stage I will not say how much we are going to pump in because we are yet to scrutinise the budget.
“Nevertheless, teams can be assured that they will receive something,” she said.
On his part, Bakali said they are delighted with the response from their sponsor and they were finalising the planning process.
“We are now working towards formalising the tournament with the Netball Association of Malawi [NAM] and, thereafter, we will announce the teams. Of course, we will decide on whether to take part or not,” he said.
NAM general secretary Carol Bapu described it as a welcome development, but said the association would wait for formal communication.
