Pioneer club championship for the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) could take place this December, the regional body has indicated.

Country champions, for example Silver Strikers for Malawi, will automatically participate in the championship scheduled for South Africa, Cosafa chief operations officer Sue Destombes told Sowetan newspaper.

“It could be hosted in South Africa this year. If no, it has definitely been earmarked for next year,” www.sowetan.co.za quoted Destombes as saying.

Destombes confirmed that two instalments of the competition will take place in South Africa and see clubs play off in a single tournament late in the year.

The Super League of Malawi general secretary Williams Banda during the week, said unless Cosafa had communicated to FAM or the clubs, his office was in the dark about the regional club event.

Cosafa agreed to introduce the club event at its annual general meeting held in Zambia last December. FAM president Walter Nyamilandu who attended the meeting was unavailable at the time of going to press.

But veteran coach Jack Chamangwana urged FAM to push Cosafa to consider two teams from each country and create depth of talent for senior national teams. Nyamilandu is Cosafa executive member.

During the week, Silver chairperson MacDonald Mafuta Mwale welcomed the cup.

“We are more than ready to participate as this is cheaper than the CAF competitions, which involves a lot of money travelling around the continent,” Mwale noted on Wednesday.
