FAM has until this September 27 to confirm participation in 2013 Cosafa Under-20 Championship which has been awarded to Lesotho as hosts.

Cosafa website and Supersport.com reported on Friday afternoon that the youth championship will run from December 3-14 whereas the draw takes places next month in Lesotho.

“We are delighted that Lesotho has agreed to host this crucial tournament and look forward to working together with the Honourable Minister of Gender, Youth and Sport Thesele Maseribane, and the Lesotho Football Association (Lefa) to stage a world-class event,” Cosafa president Suketu Patel is quoted as saying.

The tournament will be played in Maseru and Mafeteng with a round-robin group stage featuring four pools. The top team in each group will advance to the semi-finals, after which the tournament switches to a knockout format.

The last event to be staged was in Botswana in 2011 when Malawi reached the semi-final whereas Zambia pipped Angola 2-1 in the final.

During the Botswana event, Malawi team comprised players such as Yamikani Chester, Victor Mpinganjira and Brown Mizeye. The Junior Flames’ best Cosafa-Under-20 record is reaching the 2001 final under coach Stuart Mbolembole.

Cosafa Youth cup groomed Malawi players such as Joseph Kamwendo, Swadick Sanudi, Esau Kanyenda, Fischer Kondowe, Robert Ng’ambi and Peter Mponda.
