Copyright Society of Malawi (Cosoma) will start paying out royalties to musicians at the end of March, licensing officer Rosario Kamanga said on Friday.

The announcement comes after an ultimatum from Minister of Information and Civic Education Patricia Kaliati following a meeting between Cosoma and some musicians.

Kamanga said the money is not ready at the moment, but almost all processes have been done.

“We have received money for royalties accumulated in the past four years. So far, we have since produced four distributions. One was already given out to the musicians and we have three distributions remaining. What remains now is to add up the three distributions and come up with how much we owe each musician. This will be done this week,” explained the official.

He said the minister’s intervention has helped to speed up the process as they have received three computers and new employees.

Kendal Kamwendo, executive director of Music Development Institute (Mudi), which last month petitioned Cosoma to release the royalties immediately, was grateful for the swift move.
