Council agrees to pay Kafoteka K1m

The wrangle between former Flames defender Elvis Kafoteka and Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) over his medical and legal fees has finally come to an end after the latter accepted to pay him K1 million.

Kafoteka dragged Sports Council to court for its failure to honour his medical bill at Wezi Clinic in Mzuzu amounting to K250 000 for the injury he suffered while playing for the national football team.

The case was scheduled for hearing at Mzuzu High Court on July, 8 but the two parties agreed to resolve the matter out of court.

“Whereas by mutual consent of the parties through their respective legal practitioners, it is hereby ordered and directed that the matter be and is hereby wholly disposed of as follow: That in full and final settlement of this matter the respondents do pay the applicant the sum of K1 million.

“That applicant’s application for judicial review herein be and is hereby wholly withdrawn and discontinued,” read the consent order in our possession.

Lawyer representing Kafoteka, Leonard Mbulo, confirmed the development in an interview last week.

“The matter is closed. The council through its lawyer opted to settle the matter out of court, they accepted to pay our client K1 million for the player’s medical fee and for legal cost. We agreed on that condition,” said Mbulo.

Sports Council lawyer Burton Mhango refused to comment on the development saying he has been advised by his client not to talk to the media on the matter.

Kafoteka, now evangelist for Christ Fellowship Centre for All in Mzuzu, comes from Kasiya in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A)Khongoni in Lilongwe.

He got injured in 2010 when the Flames played against Cote d Ivoire in the East and Central Africa Senior Challenge Cup held in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. n
