Blantyre District Council vice- chairperson Damiano Valaliano has called on non-governmental organisations to support students with scholarships to enable them get an education and become reliable citizens.
Valaliano, who is councillor for Chikowa ward, was speaking in Blantyre on Friday during a meeting organised by the Malawi Human Rights Youth Network (MHRYN).
“Organisations need to understand that for smooth implementation of various development projects people need to be well educated.
“Such people understand issues easily and are able to safeguard various development projects implemented in their areas,” he said.
MHRYN Southern Region coordinator Masauko Thawe echoed Valaliano’s sentiments.
He said to ensure meaningful participation of the youth in various initiatives; all sectors need to work together in educating the young generation.
Thawe said his organisation will deploy eight young people as interns at the district and city councils of Blantyre to familiarise themselves with structures there on projects planning and implementation.
The interns will also be required to orient their fellow youths on the findings after a six months internship. n
