Councillors sensitised to roles

Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has conducted training for newly elected councillors to make them understand their roles and responsibilities in local governance.

The ministry organised two-day sensitisation workshops last week for the councillors in five centres across the country coordinated by Staff Development Institute (SDI).

Rural development director Emmanuel Bambe said the orientation was aimed at training the councillors to ensure their delivery of services is of standard, noting that the last time the country had councillors was nine years ago.

“We wanted them to know how they are to conduct local business and how they can manage resources so that development projects go to the right people,” said Bambe.

One of the councillors who attended the training in Mzuzu, Goodwill Chingati Banda, said even though most of them contested for councillorship positions, they did not fully understand what they were supposed to do once elected.

“All we knew was that we will be working with the people, but now we are aware of our roles and responsibilities,” said Banda.

Similar workshops were conducted in Salima, Zomba and Blantyre, targeting all the elected 457 councillors.
