Court adjourns MRA, Yeremia Chihana case

The High Court in Blantyre on Tuesday adjourned hearing of a case where public tax collector Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) is accusing property valuer Yeremia Chihana of tax evasion.

Lawyer representing MRA, Chiwala Chipeta, told High Court judge John Chirwa they needed more time before they could proceed, hence sought an adjournment.

The judge adjourned the case to a date yet to be communicated after Chihana’s lawyer, Lusungu Gondwe, did not object to MRA’s plea.

In June this year, MRA in partnership with Malawi Police Service (MPS) arrested Chihana for alleged tax evasion of K1.3 billion.

The arrest came three months after MRA impounded Chihana’s computers and files at his YMW Property Investments Company offices in Lilongwe.

Chirwa ordered Chihana’s release after Gondwe complained about alleged political interference in his client’s arrest.

Chihana, a politician in New Rainbow Coalition, came in the limelight when he valued the estate of former president the late Bingu wa Mutharika to be worth K61 billion. However, Mutharika’s family disputed the assessment as not true.
