The Creative Centre for Community Mobilization (Creccom) has today donated assorted teaching and learning materials worth K5 million (about $8,197.31) to Zomba Central Prison.

The items which include text books, exercise books, pens, rulers and chalk, are aimed at supporting the education programme at the prison.

Speaking during the donation ceremony, Board Chairperson for Creccom Senior Chief Kwataine expressed satisfaction with the success of the programme at the prison, saying it has seen many inmates being selected to national universities.

Since the education programme commenced in 2002, Zomba Central Prison has sent 36 inmates to the University of Malawi (Unima) and other public universities.

“The programme is one way of ensuring that inmates transform and become responsible citizens. As Creccom, we will continue to support the initiative,” said Kwataine.

Alfred Ngwimba, head teacher for the school dubbed Mountain View, said the donation will go a long way in addressing some challenges the school is facing.

During this year’s Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examinations, the school registered 86 percent pass rate. Out of these, five students qualified for university entrance with the highest scoring eleven points.

“Teachers are doing a recommendable job here and I take this opportunity to implore well wishers to start providing incentives for these teachers as a token of appreciation for their good job,” said Ngwimba.

The school is run and headed by inmates.
