Crime, accidents down in the North

Police in the Northern Region say crime and road accidents have gone down compared to last year.

Speaking on Tuesday in Mzuzu during a year-end party for officers in the region, Commissioner of Police for the Northern Region, Martha Suwedi, said the region performed well in combating crime and accidents despite challenges.

She said crime was reduced by 7.1 percent while road accidents were reduced by 11.2 percent.

“In 2015, the police have recorded 5 251 crimes against 5 653 cases in 2014 while there were 345 road accidents this year against 390 last year,” said Suwedi.

She attributed the reduction to team work and cooperation with members of the community who helped them with tips.

Suwedi also called for constructive criticism from the public. She bemoaned unruly behaviour by some police officers which put the entire police into disrepute.

“Police officers must demonstrate that they are well mannered and professional. If we do that, we will create trust among the public,” she said.

Prisons spokesperson for the Northern Region, Austin Mwasangwale, said the reduction in crime has not had any impact on the prisons as they are still congested.

“On our part, we can only see change when our facilities are no longer congested. But as of now, we still have problem of congestion,” he said.

Mzuzu Vendors secretary Franklin Hara also said the reduction in crime is not reflecting on the ground as there are reports of crimes daily. n
