Mzimba District Hospital has resorted to laying dead bodies on bare floor following the malfunctioning of a cold room at the hospital’s mortuary.

The district’s health officer Dr Alinafe Mbewe said the hospital had two cold rooms one of which broke down last year while the functional one has developed a fault.

“The functional cold room has a capacity of three corpses and in cases where there are more than three dead bodies, the rest are laid on the floor,” she said.

She said repairing the malfunctioned cold room would cost K2 million “but the hospital is financially challenged to meet the cost.”

The hospital’s spokesperson Raymond Kawayi said the hospital needs a total of K4.5 million to fix the cold room and a faulty incinerator.
