Crocodile terrorises Karonga

A crocodile has terrorised Kaporo area in Karonga District, where it has so far killed a man, a cow and four pigs.

Karonga Police Station deputy spokesperson George Mulewa confirmed the incidents on Thursday.

The deceased has been identified as Martin Kumwenda, 29, from Chakwera Village, Tradition Authority (T/A) Kilupula in the district.

Crocodiles are a danger to humans and livestock

According to Mulewa, the victim was trying to cross Kiwe River when the crocodile attacked him.

On the other hand, a relative to the deceased Jai Muyombe, claimed the crocodile invaded the village which is about 270 metres from Kiwe River where it attacked the deceased at his home just two days after it also killed livestock in the village.

Postmortem done at Kaporo Rural Hospital confirmed that death was due to severe head and pelvic injuries.

Parks and Wildlife Department regional officer George Nxumayo was not available for comment on the animal’s whereabouts.

Meanwhile, police in the district have advised the public to avoid visiting crocodile-infested places to avoid such incidents. n
