The Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) has announced that the Regional Cross-country Championships and regional elections will be conducted on November 24.

AAM newly elected president Godfrey Phiri said on Tuesday that the events will be held at Rumphi Community Centre in the North, Gymkhana Club in Zomba for the South and Likuni Boys Secondary School in the Centre.

“We urge all athletics clubs and our regional affiliates to be available at the venues on time so that the competitions and election of regional leaders can run smoothly,” said Phiri.

Phiri said positions that are up for grabs during the regional elections are those of chairperson, vice-chairperson, secretary, vice-secretary and treasurer. The elected chairpersons will automatically become AAM executive members.

According to Phiri, regional champions during the competition will make it to Ching’ombe National Cross-country Championships slated for Lilongwe Golf Club in February 2013.

Meanwhile, government, through Sports Council, has increased the financial backing for the regional championships from K800 000 (about $2 666) to K1.1 million (about $3 666) annually.
