Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) that organised last week’s demonstrations have branded the ruling Democratic Progressive (DPP), a party of terror staging parades in Blantyre on April 26 to stop people from protesting on April 27 2018.

In a statement thanking Malawians for coming out in large numbers during the anti-government protests last Friday, HRDC however told DPP that Malawians are tired “with their politics of terror, propaganda and manipulation”.

The letter, dated May 3 2018, has been signed by leaders of the group, Gift Trapence of Centre for Development of People (Cedep), Timothy Mtambo who heads the Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) and Charles Kajoloweka of the Youth and Society.

On July 19 2011, DPP youth cadets paraded in Blantyre, brandishing panga knives as they threatened people from demonstrating on July 20 2011.

“We thank the demonstrators for participating peacefully against the wishes of the ruling DPP and its hired mercenaries who were out spreading violence and hate messages to obstruct Malawians from enjoying their constitutional rights and demand accountability from the failed DPP leadership.

“We can assure the DPP leadership and its agents of terror that Malawians are tired with their politics of terror, propaganda and manipulation. It is time for change and if they insist holding to their undemocratic and barbaric politics, change will change them because it is only change which is constant,” reads the statement in part.

They have committed to continue with the movement of change, by ensuring that leaders are held accountable without fear or favour.

In an earlier interview with this paper, DPP Southern Region governor Charles Mchacha confessed to have deliberately interfered with the April 27 2018, demonstrations because the party believed the opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) was behind the demonstrations.
