Lifting The Lid On Hiv And Aids

DaBaby cancelled over HIV comments

Listen to this article

I didn’t know him till about two weeks ago. I am so out of what is in music but I am OK with this cause who wants to be listening to someone called DaBaby who clearly needs to be educated about HIV. Or did he make those comments to garner some illicit fame…..

The story for those of you who don’t know…. DaBaby Jonathan Lyndale Kirk debut studio album Baby on Baby (2019) peaked at number seven on the Billboard 200,while his second studio album, Kirk (2019), debuted at number one. He probably had a song that you heard in the radio, in the club…you know one of those. He attended university for two years so he is no fool!

What happened…In July 2021, Kirk faced backlash for remarks that were perceived by some as being homophobic. While performing at a festival in Miami he said, “[If] you didn’t show up today with HIV/AIDS, or any of them deadly sexually transmitted diseases that’ll make you die in two to three weeks, then put a cellphone light in the air. Ladies, if your pussy smell like water, put a cellphone light in the air. Fellas, if you ain’t sucking [d***] in the parking lot, put a cellphone light in the air.” His comments drew outrage and widespread condemnation, and he responded to the allegations with, “What me and my fans do at the live show, it don’t concern you niggas on the internet, or you bitter b**** on the internet.”

In the wake of his remarks, DaBaby’s got cancelled! Shows dropped him, brands that he represented cancelled his contract. He tried to apologise “I want to apologise to the LBGTQ+ community for the hurtful and triggering comments I made,” he said in a statement on Instagram. “Again, I apologise for my misinformed comments about HIV/AIDS and I know education on this is important. Love to all. God bless.”

Being politically correct in this hyper digitised world where everything is recorded and shared and people can respond swiftly and deftly to cancel you is a responsibility you have to carry on if you want fame. Being uninformed and saying things to come across “hard” to your fans is no longer acceptable! With fame comes great responsibility….use it wisely.
